この醜くも美しい世界/This Ugly Yet Beautiful World episodes 1–4

[Screenshot]I dunno what to make of this one. The first episode and a lot of descriptions online suggest there’s something Very Deep here, but the second through fourth episodes fall just barely this side of Urusei Yatsura in seriousness. I didn’t pick Urusei Yatsura at random: the whole “unusually naive mystery girl from space attaches herself to the protagonist” central plot element is pretty specific. Although at the same time it’s kinda generic. Farce comedy in which a male character ends up with a female helpless or naive “appendage” seems pretty common: Urusei Yatsura, Chobits, Midori Days (in which the “appendage” metaphor is literalized), Rozen Maiden… it’s all kinda fundamentally identical. I could take the sex-farce aspects at face value if the first episode hadn’t made reference to far more ominous plot directions. But instead we get three episodes of Takeru’s friends chiding him for taking a strange girl into his home (and a strange woman, at that, since the series desperately needed an American stereotype) and taking measurements for clothes. Hrm.
