巌窟王/Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, episodes (5–8)

[Screenshot]Ah, more Gankutsuou. The comments from my original write-up still stand, but some new observations as well. First: Eugenie is developing into a real character, one with actual motivations, instead of a two-dimensional bitch princess. Second: augh, the CG, it burns! I always find the stylistic disconnect between traditional animation and CG jarring, and even more in Gankutsuou, where the traditional animation has its own inherant stylistic oddities, and isn’t nearly as shiny as the CG.

But the story is developing, and the count continues to be magnetic and alluring while creeping the holy hell out of everyone. It’s brilliant and glorious, and now that he has everyone in one place, I’m damnably curious what the revenge which has been hinted about incessantly actually is.

The downside of these episodes: no Peppo! I demand extra genderbenders for the next four episodes to counterbalance this oversight.
